…not convinced but love the concept of being creatively literate…practicing creativity as intention is a worthy powerful act i don’t do enough…but noting i do practice many a creative act just sometimes semi intentionally or in a state of stupor or exploration…the road i drive on and the stories i tell would be quieter and fewer without an intention to be creative in the world…we all make stuff even if we don’t…it took a long time for me to embrace that all of it is art i can learn from or learn to practice from…
Haha thanks. Would you mind elaborating on what you aren't convinced of? I'm curious!
I had a sleepless night and this is kinda what became of it. There are some exaggerations, but I think sometimes that exaggerations themselves do reveal the truths of things that are overlooked.
For instance, I think someone might read this who has had a similar experience with creative work and said "I avoided the rules until I got tired of making a mess, and then I finally accepted the rules in my own way and learned the rules...to break them again."
Pretty much anyone who has learned to make art has experienced this on some level.
But still, even though this is a mundane experience, it was particular to me as well. It still felt immense and transformative to me. I do believe in some way that learning to impose order onto chaos in art has been a great benefit to me and how I experience the world.
But maybe I've been hanging out with the jungians too much :p Also I love the line "we all make stuff even if we don't" so true.
…so i story i like to tell is when i was making my first record i had a professional flautist come play on a song…i played sax with no training and the mouth piece upside down…after she put down her section we had a smoke and she told me and the non musicians that our goal now was to learn what she had, and hers was to learn what we had…so in that rulelessness matters as much as rules even for those whom the rules really matter…i guess that what i am saying is this might mean illiteracy is its own form of literacy, in which case i would be convinced but also at odds with the idea…so i guess you convinced me now that i engaged with my brain again lol…the empty paint bucket is filled with paint…
Yeah I was wondering if you could relate to this with music! Harmony/discord are always needed to balance each other out. That's a fun anecdote to add--did you end up playing flute? Did she really end up learning what you had to teach or was she being a snob here?
illiteracy is definitely a form of literacy. That's why theres such a thing as beginner's luck. Sometimes the burden of knowledge gets in the way of what the beginner can teach.
…i did actually play some bad electrified flute at some point…she was rad…still a professional classical flautist…i think her main point is that those who know the rules need to unlearn them and those who don’t have them need to do the opposite…and for someone seeking a full life i completely agree…in my youth i thought i was right all the time…now i know that i was and am wrong…
