“If we are lucky enough in this moment in history to have the time and the means to make art, we shouldn’t waste it. It is important that as many people as possible start making things to leave behind that tell the story of who we were; that we cared more deeply for the earth than our leaders made it seem and that we felt more deeply than the mediocre actor’s performance in a typical blockbuster film might show.”
This is so important and something I want to radiate through my own work. Also, I’ve been planning on getting into watercolor painting soon and this piece was exactly what I needed to read.
I'm glad this encouraged you to get started! Def share on notes when you feel comfortable. I haven't tried much watercolor myself, but I've felt tempted to recently!
I've been thinking about that line about your painter friend all week since I read this piece. I felt the same way about drawing and eventually got to a point where I felt pretty confident about my skills but no longer enjoyed it. Now I'm enjoying painting and while I'm not necessarily new at it, I'm not "perfect" at it either.
(The strange thing is that in the past I used to throw away all of my paintings b/c they lacked the precision of my drawings. Teachers would also insist that I would enjoy painting but I just couldn't get past the perfectionism just yet.)
This makes me so happy to hear my words made an impression on you :’) I always feel when I’m writing that I’m writing to myself. Hyping myself up in a way. It makes me happy knowing it’s helpful to others! Do you share your art anywhere?
Yes, I have a website and like to share my work in print, locally and sometimes on FB and in newsletters. I'm a multidisciplinary artist and find it hard to encapsulate my work online but definitely have been enjoying the art community on substack and look forward to reading more of your pieces! My website is alynaomie.com if you want to take a look. :3
The colors on that piece!! I love it so much.
Thank you!
LOVE the harlequin patterns all over that painting--and the rainbow in the window!
Thank you!
“Isn’t this the point of creativity—to be free?”
Damn.
As a beginner on my art journey, this resonates. Found myself nodding throughout
I’m so glad to hear! There are so many mental blocks we have to get through in the beginning. Hope you have some fun making something today :)
